I came across this antique school desk in a thrift store for $30 It has an inkwell! and is cast iron. (built to last!)  impossible to take apart. I  refinished it!  Stripped of a 1oo years of varnish, repainted the iron, applied stain, Yet I can't remember the last steps? After putting on the lacquer I??????  rub it down with steel wool and apply polish?

Yeah, I sat in those things all through elementary school. Guess I'm an antique, too. And yeah, #0000 steel wool with a light touch is what you use to smooth the final finish. You can use it with or without lemon oil.

Thanks, I went ahead and did it this morning. It is going to make a nice addition to my classroom library. I love working with wood! I remember refinishing a dresser in 1979!  I thought about it as a career!  (After buying the desk for $30 I poured another $40 of supplies into it.) Now its worth about $40!!!) Guess I'll keep the day job! ::)
