i may not be able to respond to each tech support question individually, but i will address them, and thank you for bringing them to my attention. so if you mention a problem, and see that it was magically fixed, thats what happened.

and i have no problem with anonymous postings. if they are harassing, or break the user agreement in any other way, they will be deleted and the user warned, etc. but i would like valid email addresses on all the accounts. about 20 are not valid at this point. i will be sending these 20 users private messages warning them about this sometime soon. you can hide your email address if you don't want anyone else to see it.

email or pm me if you have any other questions. enjoy!

Rudy,
We need a tutorial of sorts from some techno wizard re. how to navigate the BB now.  I notice that I must now log on before each session, or I am considered a mere guest.
It appears what you thought was an attempt by many to avoid public scrutiny was nothing more than a technical glitch.
                 God Bless,  Mark

: Re:new boards
: Rudy February 16, 2003, 07:38:46 PM
Mark,

I agree that it may be a hassel, but i always choose to remember and
enter my password here and at other places. Computer security has been
drilled into me over the last 12+ years. If you walked away from your
terminal/computer while logged on or left your username/password on a
post-it note on your monitor - you were held responsible for any
communications under your access. I had a good friend and would tease
him when he would walk away for a while - i would start typing a letter to
our section chief and talk out loud so that he could hear. It got his
attention and all of us in the shop would get a laugh.

I believe it is agreed that we want to know who we are communicating
with. Logging on is simple:
   1. remember your username and password

   2. enter username and password

   3. don't share your username/password

It all takes less than 10 seconds to log on. Just a better, safer board
this way.

Hi Sebastian!
Yes, just a, Guest among Guests ;).  Once we all figure out how to adjust to the new BB we will have to get back to some meaningful discussion.
I will post some thoughts at the Wounded Pilgrim thread that I would appreciate your comments on.
Rudy- What does logging in for each session have to do with security?  As Sebastian alludes to, I am but an ol' hippie and therefore more skilled at hugging trees than operating a computer.

Question for the administrator:
Why have John Malone and all his postings been deleted?

: Re:new boards
: brian February 17, 2003, 09:39:06 AM
Why have John Malone and all his postings been deleted?

john malone deleted all of his own posts and his account, of his own accord. i've never banned anyone.

thanks for the security reminders rudy. remembering to click 'logout', and maybe even delete the browser's history, are quick and easy ways to help ensure the security of your account.

it seems that some of you are having the old log-in problem, where you log in, and the board instantly forgets who you are, calling you a guest again. it has been working fine for me, which makes it hard for me to troubleshoot. i will make some changes soon that will hopefully help. keep me informed about these problems.

sometime in the near future i will put several of the potential new domain names for this website on a poll so we can all vote on them.

 :DHello Brian:

I was trying to find a Q & A posts to relaying some questions to ponder.

I was cruising the board as usual.

I resurrected this one.

MY QUESTIONS:

1. Yesterday as I was trying to get onto the board, I had trouble.  It kept coming up Page Cannot be Found. Not matter how much I try to refresh the page, or even back track.  I was able to get on the board, but not on any postings. I couldnt even log in.
My question is:  HOw come this occurred.?

2. When was the last time the membership list was reviewed.  How come there are so many double entries , even a couple of members have several entries in the list. Just asking?

3.  Is there a record being kept of all the postings.
Just want to know, when I resurrecting a post, that I am not really digging up something, that is better left buried.  Is there an original date when the first post of each thread was created.

Thanks  for taking the time to ponder these questions.

Hello everyone -

Steve and I discovered last night that the ga.com website is down.  We're in the process of discovering the cause.  A lot of people in this area had trouble with their cable connection after the big rain storm last week, including us, so it could be something along those lines, maybe with Earthlink.  Or it could be the host server, which we have contacted and are awaiting a reply.  Whatever, hopefully it should be fixed soon.

: Re:new boards
: BeckyW October 26, 2004, 07:22:40 AM
Hi Margaret & all-
I'm back off the sidelines to say I hope the site is fixed soon.  We referred people to it recently.  One was a friend from the midwest who hadn't seen Tamilla Palmer's article yet.  The other was someone who called us because they knew we used to be in an assembly.  They had run into some Local Church folks and an existing assembly member in the same week, and noticed that they sounded exactly alike.
Interesting, since the assembly people we knew ridiculed Local Church people as... cult members.
It's so good to have the website resource.
Appreciatively,
Becky

Hi everyone -

GA.com is back up.  The problem was that the "rent" had not been paid, as Al so delicately put it to us.

It's been exactly two years since Brent first put up the website!  An incredible lot has happened since then.  It's amazing how active it still is.  Current daily average stats are:
     Visitors   128
     Pageviews   288
     Hits   354

I hope to have a bit more time to work on it now, and am open to any suggestions for improvements or changes.  Two things I have in mind are 1) book and video reviews  2)  condensed versions of existing long articles  3) adding a section that gives a brief introduction to the assembly for friends/family.  Other ideas are welcome.

Along the lines of Becky's post, we are being linked to by other websites.  One is a new one put up by Chris and Jenn Lawson, formerly assembly observers from SLO, currently missionaries in Scotland.  The link is http://www.spiritual-research-network.com/

Cheers,

Margaret

: Re: new boards
: brian February 19, 2005, 11:58:51 AM
yes indeed, we have a shiny new bb. the old one was developing problems, and they quit making updates for it, so i converted the old bb to a new, although related, piece of bb software. it has more options and features. notably: if you really liked the way the board looked before and have a hard time dealing with change, you can change it back to the old look under your Profile options. after clicking on the Profile button above, click on Look and Layout Preferences on the left side of the screen. then you will see an option called Current Theme, and a link next to it that says Change. click it and change away, if thats what you so desire. you'll see several other options around that the old bb didn't have, that will hopefully improve your bb experience. if something isn't working, you can't log in, etc, drop me an email and i will try to be helpful. enjoy!

There seem to be many posts missing!  :o

Simply looking at the count of posts, it looks like there are about 2500 posts missing.

There used to be about 18500 posts, and now there are about 16000 posts.

There are at least 39 of my posts missing, based on comparing posts that I have files of with what's on the board.

I hope that Brian can find a way to recover the missing posts.

: Re: new boards

Are they missing or were they deleted?

Since this BB software was written by different people from the old BB software, the database contains the post data in a different format and organization from the way the old BB did it.  In order to change to the new BB system, it was necessary to use a converter to import the data from the old database to the new one.  Either there are bugs in the converter algorithm, or else there were some minor errors or glitches in the data that the old BB was able to overlook, but the converter choked on.

I noticed that some threads are completely gone, and parts of others are missing.  For example, in the "Wounded Pilgrims" thread on page 3, reply #34 on January 22, 2003, 11:03:16 pm is immediately followed by reply #35 on January 31, 2005, 11:49:56 am.  This means that more than 2 years worth of the thread is gone.  It wouldn't surprise me if Mark Campbell was a little unhappy about this.  I hope he has backup copies of the things that he posted.

I'm hoping that Brian still has the old database and is able to find a way to patch up problems with the converter.  Then he could rerun the conversion.  The past couple of days of posts may be lost, but that is better than losing many days of old posts, some of which were very important.

wounded pilgrims lost a lot of posts in the conversion. can anyone identify other major areas that lost posts? if i could get help pinpointing what posts need to be restored, then i could import just the missing ones.

also, one person has reported that the Quote button was not showing up for them in the 'Life with Verne' thread. is anyone else having quote problems?

I was just curious---I notice that some of the Threads say "new" and yet the last post
was over a year ago. Is there a reason for that happening? I have gone into my profile
and put "latest quotes on top" so the newest ones show up at the beginning of the
thread, but some of the threads say "new" for a message posted quite a while ago.
Just curious is all.

This BB seems to be different in the way it marks threads as having something new in them.  The old BB only did this when a new post was made.  This BB seems to also recognize edited posts and possibly deletions as being something new in the thread.

The colored symbols on the left of each thread are identified at the bottom of the page.  Sticky topics stay at the top.  A while back, an administrator of the BB decided that those 2 topics should be sticky.  Topics that newcomers to the BB should read can be marked sticky so that they are easy to find.

Thanks Steve.  I'm at a disadvantage, being partially colorblind.  I was puzzling over those symbols last night, wondering if they were different colors-- they look pretty much the same to me...

What length of time do you suppose an unused thread remains "sticky?" :)

al

P.S.-- OK, I went back & studied the symbols more closely & found subtle design differences, so I should be able to tell them apart.  But I still wonder how long it takes for the "sticky" to wear off-- I get tired of looking at a title that never changes... ;)

perhaps this has to do with the url you are using to access the site? do you go to http://www.assemblyboard.com or http://www.briantucker.net/bb ? for best results, only use the assemblyboard.com address.

I'm not fretting, just strumming along and wondering why she can be allowed to change a post here.

I'll buzz off, again. Need something sweet for my coffee. And  my fellow employee has what looks like scraps from her lunch sitting on her desk. I'll take a peek while she's at the copier.

I remember seeing, on the AK BB, cases where someone's quote was modified to say simply, "I'm a loser."

As an alternative, you could just read Psalm 37.

A lot of people have read the 37th Psalm, Steve, and have no idea what it's really about...

     I'm not fretting...

...see what I mean?  I suggest meditating upon Psalm 37, and praying for our Lord's guidance in applying it

      There's your Pacifier!!! ;) :)

In Christ,

How can you expect your own thread when they're already chopping off the end of the "2" in your name (or hadn't you noticed?).  You're maybe being eased out of the organization, girl...

Then my suspicions were correct..........so..........

SWTB here I come
Right back where she quoted from
Open up those heavenly quotes
Barn'cle breezes gather flies......

Ahem...er...might I ever so humbly suggest a slight modification of that final couplet to read thusly:

Barn'cle breezes get my goat...
Verne

Er...alternatively the penultimate line could read Open up those heavenly skies (lies works too)...

Ah, yes, yes. Very good, very good. (I'm so happy to see that newly found humility coming into play here, otherwise I may have just passed by your, ahem, suggestions.)

We shall try this again:

SWTB here I come,
Right back where she quoted from
Open up those heavenly lies,
Barn'cle breezes gather flies.....

I think I'll just leave the last line as is, since, well, I don't want her to know that she could get anyone's goat.  ;) She just might appear again as Dorothy Killgallen or Martha Stewart, or some of the better known entities that have visited from the barnacle boat.

Moonflower,

Bennet Cerf, Dorothy Kilgallen-- these must be names your parents told you about, because I remember watching them in action, live, on B&W TV! ;D

No one had to tell me their names; they were my family room buddies. "Enter and sign in please!"

Oops. I missed that last wink.

Yes! My parents had us memorize and spell correctly all the names of the panel regulars as a consequence for coming home late for supper.

They told us about B&W Marx days, too and would quiz us on certain episodes.

Is there a reason that IHGG CLub is not here anymore?

Is there a reason that IHGG CLub is not here anymore?

69 full threads and some posts from 6 other threads vanished during the BB conversion.

A list of the affected threads is attached to my February 25 post in this thread.

Click the quote header to find it:

The link says that the file was downloaded twice.
Both times I was testing the link, so nobody else on the BB has even looked at it.

You need to select a monospaced font to view the list properly.
I set my Notepad program to Lucida Console Bold 9 point font, which is monospaced.

I don't know whether Brian has looked at it, since the BB administrator may have a way to download the attached text file without being recorded by the download counter.

i apologize for the missing posts problem. as a stop-gap measure, i setup a modified version of the old board here:

http://www.assemblyboard.com/oldbb/

wounded pilgrims lost a lot of posts in the conversion. can anyone identify other major areas that lost posts? if i could get help pinpointing what posts need to be restored, then i could import just the missing ones.
